We motor out along the channel past picturesque Sausalito waterfront to the Golden Gate Bridge. There, we pick up the prevailing winds and set the sails for a downward course towards San Francisco skyline. Our usual route takes a turn around Angel Island. This Bay Cruise is on a tall ship, a 103' square rigged topsail ketch built in the 1790's period. Passengers are encouraged to join in and help sail the ship under the crew's supervision. You can take your place at the helm, or brace the yards around and try your hand at the nautical knots station or try the deck station and handling the lines and sails used when tacking the ship. There will be other various informative discussions covering topics about maneuvers and rules of the sea. Or you can sit back and relax.

In spring and summer nearly a quarter million seabirds nest on the stark granite cliffs that rise sharply from the Pacific, just 27 miles from the Golden Gate. Nutrient rich upwellings from the nearby edge of the Continental Shelf attract marine life of all kinds - from tiny plankton to endangered humpback and blue whales - the largest animals to ever live. From our 63 foot Coast Guard certified vessel we observe marine mammals in the surf or hauled out on the island: California sea lions, northern elephant seals, Steller's sea lions, harbor seals - perhaps fur seals. The Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge is the largest seabird rookery in the eastern Pacific south of Alaska, with Tufted Puffins, Pigeons Guillemots, Rhinoceros Auklets, murres, oystercatchers and cormorants. We scan the horizon for albatross, jaegers and shearwaters.

Many trips encounter humpback or blue whales. While underway we may acquire an escort of bow-riding Dall's porpoise, see Pacific whitesided or Risso's dolphins or glimpse elusive harbor porpoise. Since 1972 Oceanic society experts naturalists, selected for their leadership ability and enthusiasm, have conducted natural history trips: whale watches, Farallon cruises, and international ecotours around the world. Naturalists help spot whales and provide information about the natural and human history of the islands and the surrounding marine environment. Each year gray whales embark on one of the longest migrations of any mammal. Swimming 6,000 miles from their Arctic feeding grounds, they head south past the California coast to the protected lagoons of Baja California. Traveling alone or in groups of up to twelve, they reach Baja in six to eight weeks. They may travel 20 hrs and 100 miles each day in their urgency to reach the lagoons. They return north during the spring to the Arctic; this is when the whale cows can be seen accompanied by their newborn calves. Because their migration brings them so close to the coastline at many points, they are more easily observed along the west coast than any other cetacean.

Gray whales were considered commercially extinct in the early 20th century. However, legal protection has enabled their population to regain historic levels. Oceanic Society Expeditions has conducted educational gray Whale Watch trips on California since 1974.
